HAREM RENAISSANCE

English

-Lauren Harb   If you could describe Harem Reinassance in three words what would they be?

Me, myself and I.

-Do you think haremrenassance has a California DNA? Or is more of a broad 1980´s sexy vibe?

Because Harem Renaissance is a reflection of me, it is rooted in my own cultural experiences—it is both deeply California and also Middle Eastern. That being said, 80s babes from across the world are appreciated and represented whenever it feels right.

-Who are you in real life, do you have an undercover life? What are your real life hobbies how do you take the sexiness and openness of your blog outside and inside the bedroom?

I have a totally separate, serious career that I like to keep private (there’s something sexy to me about having secrets). In my free time, I channel my sexuality through Salsa and Bachata dancing. In the bedroom, I love 80s and vintage-inspired lingerie, and I’m about as shy as the ladies of Harem Renaissance.

-What is your perception of Marika Vera as a brand? What was your experience with her clothes and how does it match your sexual identity?

I am in love with all things Marika Vera. The clothing is beautifully constructed, feels powerful and feminine, playful and serious, vintage-inspired and modern at the same time. I would wear every piece in the collection in and out of the bedroom every day if I could.

-As a vintage retailer, can you give us your opinion on fashion ethics and the pros of running a brand that is partly reusing, instead of mass producing?

I wanted to pay homage to the eras bygone that Harem Renaissance embodies, so I created a small clothing line that is designed and manufactured here in Los Angeles. As much as I love making vintage-inspired clothing, nothing beats the original. It felt important to include some vintage pieces that would’ve easily been seen on any of the 80s Harem babes. Selling vintage is challenging in that fit can be tricky, and you can only sell each piece once. But it’s worth breathing life back into clothing that was first enjoyed 40 or so years ago. I think this is important for brands of all scale, but especially as a small brand with limited space and resources, selling vintage allows me to have a wider inventory without taking up too much room. It also hopefully encourages reusing perfectly wearable clothing rather than constantly consuming the newest thing.

--Is creating consciousness about consumption an important part of your brand’s DNA, or is it mostly about the retro aesthetics?

As much as this is a light-hearted brand that is all about aesthetics, I am a socially conscious person and therefore, that is at the foundation of Harem Renaissance. I could (and hope to) do more to raise awareness about over-consumption and the never-ending cycle of needing more more more. In the meantime, I model it by producing small quantities of clothing locally, not making new clothing until I’ve nearly sold out of what I have in stock, and recycling vintage clothing and accessories that complement the brand.

-Lauren and Matthew: what do you think previous decades aesthetic, sexuality and empowerment have that the present time lack’s of?

Modern day sexiness seems to be conflated with perfection and excess. What we love about retro erotica is how relatable it is. The retro fantasy often referred to the every day: with the pool man or the secretary, in the locker room or at the office. The bodies were soft, natural, real, imperfect, utterly human. Anybody could be erotic, anything could be sensual.

--Lauren and Matthew: what about those aspects you think have evolved positively up to this day? sexual identity, female empowerment, body positivity?

We both appreciate the softness and natural beauty of bodies represented in vintage porn. There’s a certain honesty about erotica pre-plastic surgery to which we are drawn. Recently, there’s been a return to accepting body shapes and sizes as they are in all their imperfections. This is so much more interesting to us than a perfectly altered body, whether through surgery or photoshop.

-Si pudieras desccribir Harem Renassance en tres palabras, ¿Cuáles serían?

"Me, myself and I"
